
The quiet cost of always performing
High performers are great at carrying weight — and terrible at noticing how much. What burnout is really trying to tell you.

Burnout rarely announces itself. There's no alarm, no clean before-and-after. It shows up as a slow flattening — less energy, less interest, less you. The work still gets done, which is part of what makes it so easy to miss: high performers are excellent at carrying weight, and terrible at noticing how much.
By the time most people name it as burnout, they've usually been running on reserves for months — not because they're weak, but because they're capable. And capability has a way of hiding the cost until the bill finally comes due.
The signs are quieter than you think
We picture burnout as collapse. More often it's subtle enough to explain away one symptom at a time:
- Things that used to light you up now feel like chores.
- You're busy all day and couldn't say where the time went.
- Rest doesn't restore you the way it used to.
- You're shortest with the people who matter most.
No single one of these is dramatic. Together, they're a signal — your system telling you the pace you've normalized isn't actually sustainable.
The fix isn't more discipline
Here's the trap: when high performers feel the flattening, the instinct is to push harder — more structure, more willpower, an earlier alarm. But you can't out-discipline exhaustion. Discipline is just another withdrawal from an account that's already overdrawn.
The way back starts somewhere less heroic: permission to slow down long enough to hear what you actually need. Not forever — just long enough to tell the difference between the demands that are real and the ones you've simply never thought to question.
Rest as part of the work
We treat rest as the reward for the work, something you earn once everything else is done — which, for a certain kind of person, is never. But rest isn't the prize waiting at the finish line. Sometimes it is the work: the thing that makes clear thinking, sound judgment, and genuine presence possible at all.
Slowing down didn't make me less effective. It made me effective again.
